plecos

i have a question how can you determine the gender of a pleco and
on a scale from 1-10 10 being the hardest how hard are they to breed

I dont know how to tell in most species but a lot of the time you can tell with catfish by looking at there ventural area (in front of the anus)

And depending on the species id say 4-8. There are much harder catfish species to breed out there.

If we are talking about the common pleco species, I would say a 10 as there is no informaiton out there and I have never heard of them being bred in captivity.

Bristle nose plecos are supposed to be fairly easy to breed. The keys are a large tank and a few males and females and LOTS of hiding places. Some tannin in the water is supposed to help but I think it is more the pH needs to be below 7 than the coloring. I tried for a while to get them to breed without much success but a dedicated tank to them should give oyu some success. I would rate them a 4-5 although I didn't have any luck. More often than not it seems they breed all by themselves without much encouragement.

To identify BN pleco male from female is rather easy. The male will have bristles that go up the middle of his nose almost between his eyes where a female will only have them on the lip.

Sexing Plecos can be fairly easy, some species will grow odontodes, males will have more than females, and they are more noticable with well conditioned fish. Sexing BNs is easy with a few species like the commons, but with some others, which the females also grow alot of bristles, can be alot harder. Another way of sexing sexually mature Plecos is to look at their body shape from above, females will have a more rounded stomach.

There is alot of different types of Plecos, some are harder to breed than others. The difficulty of breeding common BNs on a scale would be 2-3 in my opinion, they are very easy to breed going by my experience breeding them.

I was wondering about this as well. I just have normal pleco's that you can buy anywhere. Is there any pictures, links for this site or other sites that I can go to, to learn more about sexing and breeding?

I've never heard from anyone able to breed common plecos in the aquaria other than the pond.

they breed in holes in mudbanks, that combined with their large adult size obviously makes breeding in a typical rectangular glass box (aquarium) extremely difficult.

a little more info about the sp. but not much more on breeding..
