New to Fish Tanks
Great site lots of info. I've read through a lot of the posts but really haven't found one to help me out.
I'm purchasing a 55 gallon tank and stand from walmart for about 270$ first is that a good deal?
Second I want a real plant tank. I don't want huge plants, and i want them to be easy to take care of...
Third. Fish...i really like oscars but want more then 2 or 3 fish in the tank...I want the oscar cause of thier personality. What other fish out there can be personable that i can make a community tank?
The price of the tank and stand are fine...is anything else included?
However, you can't have the plants and the Oscars.
The Oscar guys recommend a min. of 55g for ONE Oscar...no tankmates. In addition that Oscar will need at least double filtration and weekly or twice weekly water changes. Oscars also tear tanks apart...so NO live plants will survive. They won't necessarily eat the plants, they'll uproot and shred them.
There are a few easy-to-grow plants, such as Java Fern and several others.
But most cichlids...with a couple of exceptions...will kill the plants.
thanks for the response. What other fish have personality? I'm new to fish so I don't know many of them. I know there are a bunch that I like the way they look, but everything I read about oscars is intreging.
I do want more then one fish though.
Do you want cichlids and not plants? Smaller cichlids that you might enjoy include Jack Dempseys, Green Terrors, Severums...if you look them up you'll have a better idea of what you like...
These cichlids can be house with a small school of Silver Dollars as well...
Angelfish prefer heavily planted tanks and can get along with quite a number of tankmates...but they're not quite as personable as some of the more aggressive species I mentioned...
Some people like the Blood Parrots as well...but be aware that they're a hybrid...
I'm fond of the livebearers...Swordtails, platies, mollies, guppies, Endler's, etc., They look wonderful in a planted tank and very colourful, although they don't have the personality you say you're looking for...
Welcome to Fishforum.com, Zeus.
Might I suggest some Congo Tetras to go with a planted tank?;) Angelfish can be kept with them along with some cories, apistos, kribs or plecs for bottom dwellers. Before you buy in your lfs, please do your research carefully. A lot of fish are not suitable with each other and most can quickly outgrow your tank.
Avoid pacus and iridescent sharks as much as possible. If you have more questions, please do not hesitate to ask us.
