the money pit
hi all this hobby is fun but it seems that every week its more and more money .
Fish keeping can get expensive depending on what you choose to keep and how you choose to keep it. The least expensive way to do it is to make sure you don't make the common simple mistakes that most beginners fall victim to. The other thing that will help save some $ is to decide first what fish you are intending to keep and then be sure to create an environment that suits all of their needs. It is harder and more expensive to set things up and then try to find a fish that can thrive in what you created.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
I just took a look at your aquarium profile... it all makes more sense if you have 13 piranha in a 125 gallon tank. Piranha get large and are very dirty fish, and that many of them shouldl outgrow a 125 gallon tank within a yr or 2 depending on what size they were when you got them. Because of their large adult size, messy habits, and high protein diet piranha can be very expensive to keep. Can you define more specifically what is costing you the most $ and is causing you the most issue? I may be able to make some suggestions to help.
From your description of the tank in your aquarium profile and also from the pic posted here I can see 2 things that will cause issues... "beginner mistakes" that are common.
1. The tank is over stocked
2. The tank is bare of decor, which will severely stress the fish if left along as a long term environment (especially with piranha, which are very shy and skittish)
Other common mistakes,
lack of research before spending money
assumptions that lots of filtration compensates for lack of water changes
lack of water testing or understanding of water testing and water chemistry
use of chemicals to simplify maintenance (and/or reduce water changes)
lack of nutrition in food choices
The list is very long, too long to put everything here. I tried to weed out some of the things that could apply to your situation. If you would like for me to break any of these things down for you, please just let me know.
This hobby can be quite cheap if you learn before hand... I spend very little on my tank especially in the last 3 years.
Your tank is very organized underneath. Wish I could say that for any of my tanks:lol:.
I'd have to say my biggest money waster for me was not completely researching the fish I was getting and having to set up another tank to keep everyone in the perfect environment. Since the eventual goal was to have mulitple tanks anyway it wasn't a bad thing, it just happened sooner than I had wanted, lol.
just flying by to say Hi. :)
hay Dawn,lovely to see you,hope you're keeping well. :)
