Reliable Pet Store!?
Those of you who have been in the hobby for many years should find the answer to this question rather quick.. and those who are in the area I live in, even quicker! Please, I'm looking for a pet shop/aquarium supplies store in Manchester, NH. However, Petco, and Petsmart do not fit the bill... If you are in the area, and know of a place that's selling used aquariums, healthy aquarium plants, and fish of both sexes.. please let me know!
-If you know of a site that delivers fish/plants that is 2-4 states away.. that works as well.. I just dont wanna order from Asia or something and get my plants/fish in the mail dead..
I know thatpetplace.com has fish and plants they are located in Pennsylvania. They ship both. I have never order fish from them but I got my plants from them shipping was $13
I beleive franks aquarium and anubais design (both online sites) are over towards the east coast. Depends a lot on what you are looking for though. Shipping though even 2-4 states away is still expensive unless you are ordering a lot of stuff. I've ordered from anubais design before. His site works a lot different from most I have seen as its all basically through email. Anyway both are importers mostly, vast majority of our fish come from Asia, South America, and lots of other places. With fish you can't actually ship directly from Asia or some country to you. You need an importers license to do that. Those who have bought bettas off aquabid from Thailand are probably familiar with this. The fish is shipped to a trans-shipper which is basically an importer. These are large shipments of fish. There is usually a few days lay over at the importer/transhipper then the fish are shipped off to their proper addresses. The "betta" system is a bit different then most other fish. Most importers buy the fish, often hundreds, then they sell them once they arrive in the US.
I'm having the same problem trying to find a great place here in Southern NH. I moved up from the So. Shore last spring and haven't had much luck either :(
I'm buying most supplies online these days but if you have to travel to MA occasionally, there are two places that I love (and miss) for livestock and plants.
Good luck and if you do findd a great store in your area, please share :) Here are the links for the stores in MA.
Tropic Isle Aquarium (Framingham,MA)
+1 to thatfishplace. I usually get my plants from em, shipping is a little pricey, but thats because they require you to get 2day shipping to guarentee plant quality. Livestock is even more expensive, but I've been to their store and their fish and plants are of excellent quality and prices are very competitive. If you can order at least 20-25 dollars worth of plants, the overall price with shipping usually comes out to being cheaper than what you buy in the stores so its not a terrible deal.
If you want to pay more for faster service, thatfishplace is good.
If you are broke (like me), Sweet aquatics is dirt cheap, has good customer service if you can get ahold of them, but plants take a while to ship since they operate out of their home.
2 places in the south
-Also, Im not sure.. but I think the owner of Temple Emporium actually breeds her own fish to sell.. Instead of getting a shipment of fish or something.. So if you are looking into breeding, she will be the right person to get advice from as well!! ;-)
