My flatmate's betta isn't looking so good. He keeps flopping to one side, yet he can still swim to the top of the tank, and is feeding and so on. There doesn't seem to be anything else wrong with him, other than his imbalance.... any ideas what could be wrong? I think she's quite upset that he's not too good!
It sounds like he is bloated. I would stop feeding him betta food and feed him only peas for a couple days. I would also make sure that you keep the water very clean and conditioned so he has the best chance to get rid of the extra waste and not have a mess. When you feed the peas, boil them for about 1 minute, let them cool or cool in cold water and pop the shell off of them. Mash them up a little and feed it to him.
Peas? Wow! Ok, I'll give it a try... hopefully it'll work for the poor guy!
yeah, peas are a natural laxative and will clear any blockages possibly causing bloat. I feed them to our round-bodied goldfish at the store on occasion to prevent swim bladder infections. A bit of epsom salt in the water too can help.
Can they be frozen peas, or do they have to be fresh?
*sigh* Well, I just went in and had a look at him, and he's died :/ His back's all twisted though, like he's in an 'S' shape, which I've never seen in a dead fish - is that normal?
I've very sorry to hear about your betta :-( Their bodies are pretty flexible and i've seen that shape before, could have just been muscle contractions before death or something. Any skeletal deformities would have developed slowly over time before death.
