How do i ship live plants?
I have a bunch of amazon swords to sell, about 10-12 small medium and large
I havent decided the price yet, but i wanna sell or trade them.
Anyone with selling experience have info on all the necessities?
ie - what shipping options
-how to package
-how to get prices for shipping
I've only shipped plants a few times, with varying success. I took a small plastic bag that fish come in from stores, put maybe 2 tablespoons of water in, then the plants, and left just enough air to make the bag like a pillow when it was closed, and sealed with packing tape. Then I inserted this in another same-sized plastic bag upside down and sealed it. The idea here was to prevent water leaking out of bag 2 even if it did leak a bit from bag 1. This bag I then placed in a cardboard box to prevent the bag being squashed in transit which would break it obviously. I used first class mail. I live in Canada, and my destinations were in the USA, so this made it more expensive that it would be within the USA. A couple reached their destination fine, some did not.
Some use wet paper towels instead of any actual water. They wrap the roots and plant leaves in several layers of moist paper towels (newspaper also works), seal that in plastic bags, and there you are. I will probably try this method next time if there is a next time. The higher cost of shipping from Canada to the US is prohibitive.
I would do this in mild or warm weather. I believe plant nurseries that do ship in the colder months use heat packs, further expense.
I place them in a bag with a tiny bit of water but no air...Just give them plenty of padding since they bruise easily.
In the USA, I use priority mail. Usually gets there in three days, and the prepaid priority boxes are great.
Heatpacks average $1 each, and you can order them from aquabid.
Thanks for the info so far!
how can i estimate the price for shipping to?
i see people say like "7$ shipping". Do they just figure out what size box before hand and for first class shipping?
$7 is average shipping. Depending where you live it may be fine. Main thing is size of box and weight.
