Considering freshwater refugium

I'm thinking of adding an in-tank refugium to my 30 gal tank... I just can't find any good info for what to put in it for freshwater tanks. I'm hoping it will help with nitrate filtration. Has anyone ever used one with a freshwater tank on here? And could you give me some advice? I was thinking of hanging it under one of my two powerfilter spillways.

Edit:
Are there any good inverts that I could put in there that could aid in bio-filtration? Or could I use it perhaps to raise live food? I'm really interested in this idea.

I've never heard of a freshwater refugium being done and i've never heard of a refugium being put inside a tank. Just curious where you got the idea from? Personally i've been working on a design for an anaerobic biological filter to keep nitrates down but I won't share that till it's made :-)
