Live Foods ?
Is anybody doing anything with live foods ?
Anything is rather broad...!
I feed live brine shrimp occasionally and plan on feeding some wingless fruit flies in the near future.
There's no section here about live foods so I was wondering if anybody was culturing any live foods, kike hatching brine shrimp for fry, growing for adults, daphnia, micro worms, redworms or anything.
With spring finally here, I thought I might get a couple of bins of green water going and maybe try some daphnia.
hmm...wingless fruit flies - how are you doing those?
So far, I'm using frozen brine shrimp and frozen baby brine shrimp. Might try frozen bloodworms.
(these are more treats as regular food is flake.)
The wingless fruit flies are really easy. I get them from a biological supply company. You put some instant media in a tube, add water, sprinkle a little yeast, and add some flies. Cap with a sponge (all this stuff comes in a set) and wait. Soon, lots of fruit flies! The wingless are great. Open the top of the fly container, invert and tap, and watch the fish feed.
Brine shrimp are easy, but the fruit flies take much less room.
Do Daphnia have much nutritional value? Somehow, I thought they were out of favor as a live food, but can't remember why exactly.
I don't know about the nutritional value of daphnia. Never raised/fed them before. Guess I need to do some research before I go there.
I read something recently about culturing mosquito larvae, sounded really easy. I just can't see my wife being happy with that particular live food raised outside or inside the house!
