Emergency Please Help

My 46gal QT has been running for years,
new filter transition about 8 weeks ago.

Yesterday ammonia 0.25 nitrite 0.00.

The power went out for 4 hours last night.

It had 2 dead rainbows this morning.

Today ammonia 4.0 nitrite 1.0.

I have started a water change right now.

How much water do I do 30%, 50% 70% ???

Do I need to rinse or clean the canister filter?

Thank you.

Did a 30% water change now.

Starting on another 50% in a minute.

Should I just let the filter keep running?

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your fish :(

Chances are you lost your beneficial bacteria based on what your readings are. Do you have any other established tanks that you can pull some of the media from to put in the canister?

I'd use triple + doses of Prime with the water changes in the meantime.

I have stress coat for now.

My prime is like 3 years s
old, I can't tell if it expires.

Working on it.

Thanks.

How long has it been since you last cleaned the filter? If you are going through a re-cycle of the tank I would not mess with the filter until your bacteria colony re-establishes itself.

Use the Prime. Do not use Stress Coat or any other product.

Do major water change, up to 75% of the tank using Prime; once is sufficient.

Rinse the filter thoroughly.

Later I will explain the rationale of this. But first thing is to fix the water.

Byron.
