Another round of identify that Rainbow fish
This pictured rainbow fish had been solo at my LFS for several months so today I cracked and bought it up. It was bought with an assorted bunch and the LFS didn't know the common name or scientific. Can someone hook me up with some knowledge please? If you can't tell by the photos it is a very vibrant solid goldish yellow color. Right now it is chilling with my three Cairns Rainbows. (Before anyone yells at me, I know the profiles call for a 5 minimum) but I have to wait for more to come in at the LFS.
Judging by some of the higher quality images that I find on google, could it be MELANOTAENIA HERBERTAXELRODI?
I would suggest it is more likelyMelanotaenia splendida. I am not at aqll up on rainbows, so I accept this may not be the species. There are four subspecies, which each differ in colour or patterning. M. splendida inorta may be the one, here's a photo.
Its quiet likely a hybrid IMO. Especially if it came in as "assorted rainbows". There are always more and more hybrids showing up. One thing I can say almost certainly is that it is female. You may need to watch out as your other two males may easily harass her too much.
