Having issues

I'm sure it's my lack of plants actually in the tank. Anywho, my plants are always brown with grime, even after I "clean" the tank. Not sure if this is an algae and if it is, if it's a good kind. I know its not a very descriptive post, I can post pics if needed. Hopin I can get some sort of help. If you need more info/pics let me know and ill describe more detail.

how long has the tank been set up and what are the inhabitants?

Could it be diatom algae?

oh umm tank has been set up about 8 months. right now I just have 5 guppies and 2 cory cats, and yes i know both do better in larger quantities. Just haven't had the best couple of months.

As far as plants I just have 2 (2 died a couple months back) they are Echinodorus Amazonicus (amazon swords)

If it easily rubs off the leaves (with fingers) it is likely diatoms (brown algae), usually only seen in new tanks; in older tanks, may be too little light. Can you post a photo of the tank, and a closeup of a leaf?
