How long before I give up on these fins regrowing??
I have a pair of dwarf cichlids in a hospital tank. They were given to me by my LFS as they were in a tank with some rams and they got badly beat up. The LFS had given up on them and gave them to me. Of course I felt badly for them and wanted to try to help them.
The female has a ratty looking tail but it's starting to finally fill in. The male, on the other hand, is completely missing his tail and after six weeks (with zero regrowth of anything that I can see) I think now that he may never regenerate his tail. How long does it usually take before you can determine that the tail will never repair?? Even while lacking a tail he swims and gets about the tank just fine.
After observing them for six weeks what I thought was a pair is not. They take great pains to avoid each other. I'm not sure if I should add these two to my 75 gl, where I have six others of their same species, Dicrossus filamentosus. Lacking his tail this male would likely be a big target for the other males in my 75 gl tank??
22 views of this thread and no one has any advice for me??? :-(
I know someone has the answer to this...so tell me, I need to know!! (lol)
His tail should have started growing back by now. I'd keep him away from the other males, or put him in with the others and watch him to see how he fairs with the others.
Thanks for confirming, I thought his tail should have started to have some growth by now. I really don't want to put him in with the other males. If there is a problem I'd never be able to fish him out of the 75 as it's too well planted. There is no way I will break down that tank to fish somebody out. It seems he will be living his life solo, poor guy.
