New Severum
 

Hey all. My husband brought home this handsome fish yesterday. I know it is a severum, but am wondering about the color and gender, is anyone able to help my identify. This is the first cichlid I've ever had, but have had aquariums as a hobby for about 15 years. Right now we have a 55 gallon tank set up, but are planning on getting a 125 in a year, possibly less. Right now there are some rainbowfish in with it, but I've been reading that severums are typically ok with that. This fish is approx. 3" at this time. I've heard that males as they get older show lots of squiggle like markings on their face and gills, whereas the females have very little if none atall

That's a Green Severum. Pic is a bit blurry so can't see the detail much but HMlairy is correct. The males will have lots of squiggles on their face and females do not.

Well, we went back to the LFS today to look around, and my husband showed me the tank this little guy came from, and it said he is a rotkeil severum, and I guess as he ages he should get some red on top of his head. That would be cool. Still don't know for sure on the gender, but I am thinking it is a male, as I think there may be some squiggles on his head. I was also looking at their other severums, and they also have some with red stripes that were absolutely beautiful, but I don't remember what they're called, but they were like $50/each. We are thinking about getting another one or two severums.

Ahhh....I love Rotties! Here's a pic of mine when I first got her. She's colored up a lot more since.

Oh, yours are beautiful! I really like the red one, I would like one of them! Beautiful! I took a couple more photos of my little one, like I said, right now it is about 3" so still just a little guy.

If anyone is able to tell the gender, let me know. I think we are going to be getting another one this weekend. My guess is a female, as I guess maybe I don't see any squiggles, unless this one is till too young to tell.
