Where did my Nitrites go?

I was cycling my 55-gallon fish tank with six platys and three turquoise rainbow fish. After what seemed like forever and a zillion 15 percent water changes, I finally got some nitrites. The first day I had them, it was just a trace. The second day, there was a .50 ppm. The third day, there was about 2 ppm. I did a 15% water change and removed the rainbows because my wife doesn't like them. The fourth day, no nitrites to be seen and the ammonia was back up to .5 ppm (they were almost gone). Two days later, still no nitrites and the pH seems to be varying dramatically.

Was this just because I moved the rainbows? Should I put them back? Any ideas?

Thanks.

KC

Possibly some of the bacteria died off when you removed the rainbows. Give it time to balance again. (day or two.)

Sounds like you're doing good. In two days, test nitrate. you might be cycled. :)
