I would like to find out, is it better to have a thermofilter or have the two devices seperate? I have a 46 gallon bowfront tank, in case size has any bearing.
Each way has benefits, with the all in one unit you dont have to look at the ugly heater but if the filter pump fails then the heater is useless with each separate if the filter pump fails then at least you can just replace the filter instead of buying a whole new heater/filter unit. Although the combo unit should be a bit better at keeping the water a uniform temperature but not enough to justify the extra cost, at least to me.
I would go for a in-line heater if you dont want to see a heater in the tank, otherwise, separate is usually better as zof said, better than having to replace a whole unit in case something fails.
