29 gallon bottom failed
Anyone ever have the bottom seam of a tank fail without leaking first? My 29 gallon in the living room failed suddenly Thursday pm! I'm upstairs working on my 55 and my kids yell up that the tank is leaking (I had just done a water change in the 29 an hour before). I rush down, water is pouring off the stand and then I'm siphoning out as fast as I can while my kids catch the fish. They are in a 5 gallon bucket with my canister filter running now as I set up a new 29.
Anyhow, on inspecting the failed tank, it leaked until I had ALL the water out. It looks like a long stretch of a bottom caulk line failed. Any risk in re-cauking and reusing the tank? It's 17+ years old, so I guess it was due... I just never had one fail without any small leaks warning me before. It sucks
Sorry to hear it, 17 years seems like a pretty long time to have a tank so I think it did rather well, then again I have never had a tank nearly that long. As long as all the plastic and glass is ok you should be able to reseal it, given the age I would probably strip all the caulk off and reseal all of it.
Chances are it was the water being readded to the tank that was the straw on the camels back, your sides might be ok but if your already doing the bottom might as well do all of it.
True. It would really stink to put all that effort into resealing the bottom just to have one of the side seams let go!
A large tube of silicone is cheap and beats having to wet-vac the floor again.
Epilogue - fish are in a new 29, I'll reseal the old one at my leisure...
