Is it normal for a bristlenose pleco to be aggressive?
I thought that my Betta was going to be the most aggressive fish in my tank...but it turns out it is my bristlenose pleco! The Betta is surprisingly chill...he'd rather just have his swimmy space and he's allll good.
The bristlenose however, is a different story. He gets really, for lack of a better term, 'lunge-y' during feeding time. I keep finding him sucking on the albino cories to get them out of his way...and he will dart at the Betta to make him go away. I don't think he's going to hurt anyone, but I am worried about him stressing out the little cories? I guess they don't really care, they just keep coming back after he boots them out of the way haha.
Does he need company or is this just normal feeding time behavior?
I dont think its normal, but from what Ive read they are territorial. And it could just be its personalilty, its different from fish to fish just as people so it could just be an angry little fellow.
Poor pleco. I shouldn't have left him alone in the tank for two weeks before I added the Betta. Now he thinks the whole thing belongs to him.
BN are generally peaceful with other fish, but males especially will be aggressive with their own so unless you have a very large tank with several "caves" I would not get another BN. One on its own is fine. Have a read of our profile to see more on this; click on the shaded name, Bristlenose Pleco.
I suspect he is hungy when the food appears and like most of the loricariids not too pleased about other fish taking it away. In my view, nothing to worry about, from what you've told us. But keep him single.
That's exactly how my Bristlenose Pleco is towards my betta and cory catfish. I think it is mainly territorial. They don't want anyone near them when it's feeding time. It's their food, no one elses.
