Apisto Agassizi (aka Flame tail)
Hey all, I have a female flame tail apisto who's always been very social and inquisitive. Lately I've been noticing that she's been hiding under one specific rock (though there are two large caves which she switches back and forth from). She's not been eating that I've seen. The other wierd thing is she let the GGR run her off yesterday and I know she can beat him up. I know that apistos prefer to lay eggs and such in caves rather than open, but she's not protecting any one area and the male isn't hanging out with her. I don't think she's being threatened as she'll stay in the cave with one of the pearl gouramis (who'd have thought that the pearls would hide in caves rather than be top level swimmers ). Anyone have any ideas?

Possibly an internal infection or parasite. The temp may be too low for her also.

Metronidazole might help in this case, Leif.:)

Well, I keep my tank at about 79F. It might be because of being bullied. I noticed that since adding my angelfish in, my rainbowfish started getting nippy with the other fish and delighted in chasing the GGRs around. The rainbowfish got replanted to the shark tank to deal with fish more of the nippy nature. I'm sure the tiger barbs would love new members for their school. :P I added a pair of lyretail swordtails in their stead.

Well, I'm hoping this is a good sign. This morning I came down to feed and she was in plain sight. Though she's still not freely swimming, she is staying now where she can watch the tank and doesn't have her fins clamped, so I'm hoping this is a sign she'll start joining the crowd. :) The only aggression I've seen lately is the GGR against the Lyretail and looks more like setting pecking order.

Well, she died over night. :( She was making efforts to come out and socialize a little each day and stopped hiding under rock but I guess that wasn't enough. :(

I'm really sorry to herar that! :(

Did you find out what was wrong with her? Poor wee soul!

Unfortunately, I only caught a glimpse of her corpse. I'm not sure where it is and every time I pass bu the tank, I search for it. It's got so many plants in the tank that if I start lifting up everything, it'll be a nightmare replacing everything and likely stress the fish out.

That's really a shame. Whatever it is I'll keep my fingers crossed it doesn't affect any of your other fish.

I know what you mean about the plants though - I've had a fish "disappear"completely once.

My LFS owner had a tank get so filled with an Amazon they thought they lost a fish. Once they pulled the sword out, they found the fish thriving. :P It happens. I've not seen my cherry shrimp in the comminity tank, so I'm thinking they are all hiding.
