GH reading through the roof.
I tested my water recently and my nitrate and GH readings were high. I took care of the Nitrate problem but I don't know what to do about the GH or my water being very hard.
So what is the best way to go about solving my GH problem?
Could this also be causing algae in my tank?
Re: GH reading through the roof.
What is your GH? I keep mine from 8-12 dGH which is about 128-200 ppm.
I have that stick you put into the water and depending on what color it gives you, is what the water is rated at. Well it is on the highest color on the stick.
Now yes I know I should be using the fluid testing kits but I haven't found a good priced one yet.
So is this going to be a problem. Everything else tested out fine.
Well it could cause algae and it could be a major problem if we are talking about a GH that is just rediculous. I know most fisah can adapt to most readings but I wuld bet when the GH gets to levels of 500 or higher that there would be some negative effects on the fish.
What should I do to correct this?
Bottled water or R/O water is the only way I know without chemicals or using a softening pillow
Do you mean for now on I should use bottled water to fill up my tank?
Using R/O water or bottled water for part of the water change swill lower you GH unless you have something in your tank that is cauisng it to go up.
If your tap water has a GH that high then you have to use bottled water, R/O water or get a water softening pillow. If your tap water is not that high then there is something in your tank that is causing it which is likely a rock or the substrate.
