you really have to get up close to see that spot, might as well wait till the female gets really fat to know that she is pregnant

Not really, I have found that the gravid spot is pretty easy to see, especially because it darkens when they are pregnant.

Okay, well do Platies get the spots too? cause i just bought a male and a female platy today and the female has the spot on her

Isn't it said that the gravid spot shows because of all the dark eyes of the baby fry inside her, as she gets closer to delivery date it gets more prominent... that is what I've heard.

sounds like a good enough reason to me, seeing as their not in eggs and are a bit larger than the egg layers, so you would be seeing the eyes, cause as it got closer for my zebra danios eggs to hatch the eyes became visible

Yes that is true. As the babies develop their eyes get bigger and darker. Sometimes the gravid spot will look like stained glass towards the end because you can see all the babies in there.
