Considering breeding Olive Nerites, info?
Hi all, Im a bit new to Tfk.com, I frequent the betta site usually.
In addition to my bettas, I purchased (about a month and a half ago) an olive nerite snail from Bob's tropical plants (mgamer20o0) They gave me a second nerite with my olive, which I gave to a friend to enjoy (hes almost black in color)! It ("she") eats like mad (Im going to reduce it..) and subsequently lays eggs like crazy.
Ive recently begun to toss around the idea of breeding this snail, and was hoping someone could cast a bit of light on rather confusing information. Ive scoured various sites and forums and have found:
-They need brackish water (but can(?) breed in fresh/salt, with poorer results)
-To have the eggs hatch, an optimal temperature is around 77'F.
-The unshelled snails need a good source of Iron to develop healthy shells.
-The area should not be too bright- needs dark(?)
And a bit of other info.
I intend, of course, to do more research, but am seriously considering the idea.
However, I have yet to find a good answer to:
-Do I leave the snails, if/when hatched, in with the parent?
-Do I leave them in the brackish water?
-What is the optimal level of salinity?
-What do the young snails need to eat? (I have copious amounts of plants- but no excess of algae.)
-Will algae wafers suffice?
-About how long do they take to develop a shell and grow to an adequate size?
Thank you for the help on this- I really love my little "Olive" (Aka, Big Mama or "Superpooper" c: ) and would enjoy being able to sell/give others a nerite of their own! Such cute little buggers.
They are sexual. You will find more info here on breeding nerites.
