Hi, I have researched the various cycling methods online. I have a 2.5-year old daughter who expects to see 3 fishies in the tank asap, so a possibly lengthy fishless cycle is not an option. (It's a 20 gallon high.) My LFS is great, been around 25 years, I trust them, etc. They have been selling Nitromax for several years, and customers are very happy with the results (and most often use it for a fish-in cycle).
Who has used Nitromax with a fish-in cycle with good/bad results?
Who has used Nitromax with a fishless cycle (with pure cleaning ammonia as the bacterium food) with good/bad results? How much does it speed up the cycle?
The only negative reviews I've found have been from people who used it improperly (as a fishless cycle without ammonia--which is pretty funny--poor bacteria didn't stand a chance!).
Thanks for any help!
It's largly unneccasary...
The bottle is sealed, correct? The bacteria will have starved.
If you want fish in it ASAP, you could easily get some nice hardy plants (like swordplants, java fern, anubias, ludwigea repens) and add a few small fish to the tank.
It's really a lot easier to grow plants than you think... I never cycle my tanks, but thats just because I put lots and lots of plants into each one. Plants absorb ammonia, so there's no need a for a cycle.
Proper lighting (can buy the flourescent tubes at home depot or wal mart for a couple dollars) and nutrients (liquid fertilisers for aquariums aren't expensive) are all you need...
If you'd rather add something to the tank, I bet a tablespoon of dirt from your yeard would have more bacteria than the nitromax... (As long as no pesticides or fertilisers have been used, it actually will work.)
like he said, if you want to put fish in immediatly, the best thing to do would be to add a bunch of easy to care for plants, and you won't even need a cycle. Im not familier with nitromax, but I do know that Tetra SafeStart could work since it has live bacteria in it, but your best option is live plants.
