I am in the beginning of a fishless cycle and I wish to change to a Flourite gravel. Should I change soon or is it okay to change gravel later on? I wish to do a FULL gravel change.
Being you are in the middle of the cycle, if oyu don;t have fish I would change it right now. If oyu do have fish in there then if the fish are hardy and not delicate then go ahead. If they are more delicate then I owuld wait or try to move the fish oout and do the change then because flourite can be so messy and cloud the water bad even if rinsed really well.
As fish_4_all said, now would be the best time.
As a comment of experience, I've got flourite in my tank and I really hate the stuff. The flakes compact quite a bit, half of my weekly vacuuming is trying to get the small debris out of the flourite (and I've had the tank for months and that's still the case). Not to mention, you will need to THOROUGHLY wash the stuff before putting it in the tank and even then your tank will be cloudy for at minimum a couple of days. I know someone it took 3 water changes to clear up. Vacuuming is a bit tricky too because hte rocks are fairly light, so they will stay in the pump as you move it around the tank and slowly start spilling everywhere. I'd recommend river rock if it's not too late.
I agree with everything said. Change it now, but I would stick with rock. Fluorite is such a pain.
why is flourite a pain?
When it's first put in there is so much dust, even when it's rinsed. That is the easy part. It "flakes" off and when I vacuum, I spend more time picking up little pieces of fluorite than actual debris.
I would never do it again personally and I'm glad my larger tank has natural rock.
Is there a reason you really want fluorite over standard gravel?
I've given serious consideration to changing out the flourite in my tank. It does look nice in the tank once it's settled again, but it just sucks vacuuming. In the bag, flourite is brown, but once it's thoroughly cleaned, it's pink. Even once it's clean, it hides all of the small debris.
