1 of 4 mollies sick...PLEASE HELP

I have a 30 gallon tank with 4 Mollies Black/siler, 3 Marigold Variatus, 3 Sunburst Platy, 1 snail. It is a fairly new tank about 2 months with fish, but it was set up for an additonal 3 weeks before the fish hit the water.

All the fish and the snail seemed very healthy and active until about 4 days ago, one of my black mollies started hiding in some of the rocks, when he did come out (which only happened when I bumped the rock while cleaning the glass) all of his fins are straight back, his tail fin is closed as tight as possiable as well. He (believe it to male) will not come to the surface to eat nor will he eat when the food falls to him.

All the other fish are very active and eat well, I tested the water and it looks to be just fine and I even brought a smaple of the water to my local pet store to confrim, which they did. I should mention the nitrate level was a little high, but a small amount of water change and condtioning additve corrected that issue.

I am at a loss...I am hoping someone might have some ideas to point me in the right direction.
Thanks!!

do you use salt? Mollies do horribly without salt. oh, and sexing mollies is really easy if you want help with that

I did use salt, both when first setting up the tank and when I refreshed about 4 gallons of water recently.
I thought the same thing, but only 1 of the 4 is having issues. I am thinking it might a fungly issue with that specfic fish....

what is the temp of your tank?

BarCar714 03-07-2011 10:04 PM

At last check the temp was 81 degrees within a 6" of the heater and 79 degrees on the other side of the tank

hm...that rules out all of those options...is he defecating normally? eating normally?

BarCar714 03-07-2011 10:26 PM

He was until a a few days ago, then he just stopped. He hides constanly and the only reason I know he is still alive is when I move the rock he is hiding in he swims out...right to the bottom of the tank fin's all tucked back and in about 3-5 minutes he is right back into the rock.

So I am not sure if he is defeacting properly, I know he is not eating as he normally did a few days ago.

do you have any pics of his current condition? is he JUST clamping his fins or is there anything else unusual about him?
