Finally purchasing discus!
I have been waiting for this for a long time!
I am now going to dive into the discus world ( not blindly of course lol)
I am waiting for an acquaintance that i met through a friend to get his order in later this month, and then he told me he is going to be treating them for any parasites and disease in a quarantine for about 3 weeks before I can pick them up.
With this in mind, I was wondering if it would even be necessary for me to do a quarantine and treatment of my own before adding them to my main tank. I don't want them to be stressed from all of his medications and treatments and then dealing with mine for another 2-3 weeks.
What do you think?
Would like to think /hope, dealer was raising/selling, healthy Discus that did not need treatment for parasites or disease.(This would put me off purchasing these particular fishes).
I would at the very least,,, go to the fish profiles here,, and read what to look for with respect to healthy Discus assuming you are going to be able to SEE the fish before you purchase them.
There are those over at SimplyDiscus.com who I would trust in purchasing fishes sight unseen, for it is their livelihood and reputation on the line, and you can read from other's who have purchased these fishes.
Otherwise,,I would not purchase fishes I could not first look at, or fishes that needed to be treated with meds before purchasing.
He isn't the breeder, he gets them directly from one. I don't know who the breeder is but regardless of were they come from its always good practice to quarantine any new fish from all my research, whether directly from a great breeder or even a highly reputable fish store, just to be safe. I will be checking them out when he gets them in to see which ones look the best and healthiest, also what treatments he's using, and then pick them up after his quarantine.
I just don't want to put them under unnecessary stress of going into another bare quarantine and treatment if they just went through it.
I will be reading more on what to look for while choosing healthy discus, and i will also post back again when i find out the quarantine methods he is going to use and go from there. THANKS!
Are these discus you're purchasing going into a community tank with other fish or will they be in their very own tank? Obviously if they are being kept alone there would be no reason to QT.
Defintely peruse the web on the articles (with pictures) that show what to look for in a healthy nice specimen. It's amazing what I used to think was a good looking discus compared to what I know think is a good looking discus. I use to think it was all about color and striations, now I know that nice round bodies (without pointy looking heads) with small eyes are key traits to be looking for.
