Sounds like you were thinking about "painted" fish.

They looks so cool! They're genetically modified fish though...

ndjs 06-10-2007 04:18 PM

Yeah, they are genetically modified. But, before that gets you upset, it's almost impossible to find grain or any sort of farmed fruit/vegetable/whatever that hasn't been genetically modified to prevent disease, grow larger fruits, grow more quickly, or resist pesticides.

indeed but fish are not vegetables!

tangy 06-11-2007 12:46 PM

ohh, my mistake. although i still think peoples shouldnt mess with fish like that. i dont see fish giving us genes to make us flourescent for their own purposes.lol.

ndjs 06-11-2007 01:25 PM

haha, but to argue....

Who's to say that fish wouldn't do the same to us if they had it in their power? The genes that make "glofish" glow is an organic gene, the colors are caused by some genes from jellyfish iirc. Nothing toxic, poisonous to the fish, nothing which causes any harm whatsoever to the fish.

The intelligence of humans would be stuck somewhere WAAAY in the past without genetics. Now we know why certain diseases exist. We can test to see if someone will get a certain disease. We can even tell an expectant mother if her child has a genetic abnormality.

Here's an example. Lots of us have dogs right? Well the genetics of dogs have been controlled through selective breeding in order to give the most aesthetically pleasing or functional traits. It's not different than what Gregor Mendel did with the peas, and he's known as the Father of Genetics.
