How much filtration is too much?
I have a 50gal with a Rena XP4. This Filter is is rated for a 250g (or up to 300g with extra filter media) the flow on it is 450gph.
Is there Such a thing as too much Filtration?
At that rate your are cycling all your water 9x an hour which might seem kind of high, I think generally people recommend 3-5x the volume of your tank an hour but I think more to your point, you can never have too much filtration, but as for the flow that could be more of an issue depending on what fish you have and if they really want that much flow. Research your fish and find out if they come from fast moving streams or slow ponds, if they come from fast moving waters then they should do ok but you should watch them to see if they are constantly trying to stay out of the current in certain parts of the tank as a sign that the current is just to much for them.
I've also notice, at least in my case, live plants do better with very little water movement as they are not constantly battling the current to grow.

I do not see the problem with turnover rate amounting above 5 times the water volume except the output flow but there are ways to make a compromise so the overfiltration will still benefit the fish. You'll find that we goldfish enthusiasts prefer to use turnover rate 10x or more for the goldfish as they poop a lot. You can use spraybars to muffle the flow or veer into obstacles to disperse it.

Various things influence how much filtration is beneficial or needed. Live plants, the type of fish and how many, what one actually means by filtration, if it is mechanical, biological or chemical.
