Aquarium Ecosystem?

I recently bought a 28L tank and was wondering if it was possible to make it self sustaining i.e shrimp would breed fast enough to have enough for the fish to eats some etc so that i would not have to feed and make the whole set-up more natural? would this work or would the fish just gorge themselves until all the shrimp/other food was gone?

I'm afraid anything self sustaining with live animals tends to be very very large in ratio to the creature you are keeping. And most likely you are right and the fish would over eat the environment if its not large enough with enough places for the food to survive, its a very careful balancing act you would have to create to make it work. Just think of how much room the animal has in the wild, theres probably at least hundreds of gallons per fish in the wild, you would probably need to look at least a 50 gallon tank with 1 or 2 small fish before you can consider it big enough to self sustain.

You might have better luck in a tank that size to self sustain shrimp with plants and everything once it is well established. And if you do it right you might be able to get a few algae eaters become self sustained too.

Self sustaining enclosures require leaving the flora and fauna to flourish themselves with auto water changers. A tank cannot do well without auto water changers. In the wild, water constantly replenishes itself so without that, there is no way your critters will survive for a long time with dangerously toxic substances abound.
