Balloon Molly fry
I'm new to this website and the hobby in general. I have a 10 gallon tank with three adult balloon belly mollies that I just got a few weeks ago. I guess I brought them home pregnant because I believe they are all female. The other day I found a small black spot swimming around and ran out to buy a breeder net to keep him safe. Today while doing a small water change (the water seems kind of icky and i think this might just be me but since it's warm I really think it smells a little more than a cold tank would) I found two more babies! I don't know where they are coming from or who is even pregnant.
My question is can I put the three fry into a 2.5 gallon tank with a heater and sponge filter?
or... Should I leave them in the main tank in the breeder net?
How big of a tank do I need to keep all six?
Is it okay to just feed the babies crushed up flake food?
I would put them in the 2.5, as long as they are the only inhabitants. the sponge filter is a good idea, they cant get sucked up it. Make sure you acclimate them, though, for a long time. baby fish have a harder time with sudden water changes, and it could kill them. Congrats on the babies, though!
Most of the female livebearer's unless they have never been introduced to males, are inherently pregnant when purchased. They enjoy hard alkaline water with 12 degrees+ GH and ph between 7.5 and 8.0.
The fry would appreciate three SMALL feedings per day with crushed vegetable flake food, and or spirulina flake or pellets also crushed. Omega one veggie flakes and or goldfish flake will work.(the fish are largely herbivores).
The fry should be kept in a cycled tank with temp around 80 degrees F. The 2.5 gallon with sponge filter could work if the sponge filter is mature.
At around four weeks, the fry should be large enough to be placed with the adult's without fear of them being eaten by same.
