what are hatchet fish like and do they jump alot?:-?
They are cool fish that thrive in groups and swim in the upper part of the tank. The ones i had played all the time chasing each other and also swimming in unison in pairs. You would definitely have to cover your tank they DO jump. The like a lot of open swimming space at the top of the tank. Also floating plants for partial coverage. Great fish, very pretty, they seem to shimmer in the light when they turn.
Several species are included in our profiles. Second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top of the page, then click on Characins. There are I think 4 or 5 different species of hatchetfish included.
I have marbled hatchets and have to say their behaviour isn't that interesting - i find they hang motionless for looooong periods. Their unique body shape is cool though.
