Just got a brand new tank! Need filter suggestions :)

Hey, I got a 20 gallon tank for my goldfish but now the filter is no where near big enough to clean all of the tank regulary (it is a starter kit one). So i've decided to buy a new one but not sure what type to get (internal, external etc)
Help :)

hi there!!!

I would go for the Mariland peguins because they are a high brand and have BIO-wheels. I had an aqueon and after the filter got a little dirty the water overflowed and it skipped the cartridge(and it was a 45 gallon filter, I have a 20 gallon). The Marineland BIO-wheel filters have a very neat and clever design that lets you put in double cartridges and ofcourse the BIO-wheel is where all the bacteria live and it never has to be replaced unless it breaks(which is prettyy unlikely) and the water never skips the cartridge filter. I would get the one for 30 gallon tanks so you have a little more filtration, but dont get one larger than that because its going to mess with the biological stuff( someone told me that, it makes sense) so yeah thats my two cents but yeah just keep asking questions anything that you might have in mind ask it could mean a drastic change in the health and well-being of your little fishies!!!

take care and happy fish keeping!!!

You'll have a much easier time maintaining a goldfish tank if you keep it barebottom. Of course, it would look dull but adding live plants (to help with water quality as well) will add to its aesthetic looks. I keep the plants potted.

For inspiration, you can look at my fellow staff, Marilynn's photos of her barebottom goldfish tanks.

You need to clean out the filter pads, that's why it skipped over it. Just wash the foam out in aquarium water and get the gunk off.

Amazon swords
Cryptocorynes
Anubias
Java ferns
Egeria densa - If you're lucky your fish is picky to it.
Nymphaea lotus
Duckweeds
Vallisnerias

The best filter I have ever used is the one I am currently using, which is the Marineland Penguin BioWheel 150B on my 29 gallon tank. It is amazing! My tank was a set up and came with the standard power filter by tetra, and it did not do anything except move water! Once I put on my Penguin filter, it was amazing to see the difference in the tank!! You can search for them online and think about ordering one via mail if they arent readily available in stores for you.
