Red Phantom Tetras
I have 3 red phantom tetras (1 male, 2 female), that are kept with 4 other black widow tetras. about 4 days ago now i noticed my red phantom tetras started courting, amd i noticed that the females were a little more porky than usual. So i moved the two females and male into my breeding tank. Which has minimal light, and is obviouslyt heated and filtered (with a fine net over the filter). It has a plant in there and a moss ball as thats all i had. And also some black gravel.
Anyways its been about four days and they dont appear to have spawned, and they are still courting.
They wont eat either... seem too busy courting.
The fish are healthy and good colour, although the male has slightly lost his coolour, but not badly.
any ideas as to why they wont spawn, or any breeding tips would be appreciated
Welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping!:-D
The reason they wont breed is likely the water chemistry. Tetra prefer slightly acidic (most of them prefer a pH of 6-6.5 ish). I have alot of different schools of fish, and none of them breed because the water is too basic (mine is at the lower 7s). You can test your water chemistry with a cheap test kit. Drops are more accurate than strips.
Also, all tetra prefer a group of at least 6 of each species (Black Widow and Red Phantom Tetra are 2 different species and each require a group 6, toatalling 12 for the 2 schools).
