What should I do???

I just picked up a 20 gallon tall set up for free. It has 3 red phantom tetras, 3 black skirt tetras, one common pleco, 1 rubber lip pleco (I think?), and some kind of cory cat (poor little thing is all alone).

Well, she lowered the water and had everything ready to pick up when I got there. I just got it home and started refilling it. It's disgusting! Every wall has algae everywhere, there's a TON of uneaten food floating around. Every time one of the bottom feeders move, even more crap/food starts floating around. I can't even see the fish unless I get up close to the tank.

Should I do a good gravel vac tonight, or will this stress the fish more than living in their own...well, you know?

Also, I'll probably rehome all the fish except for the rubber lip pleco (if that's even what he is). The tank is already over crowded, and all the fish in there need more of their own kind except the plecos, which one is already 5 inches or so (the common) and I know he'll quickly outgrow the tank. The fish are pretty active considering the move and nasty water.

Sounds like one that I picked up on Craigslist a while back. I vaccuumed the gravel really well, but only did a little at a time, spacing it out over a few days. That way, the fish get a gentle introduction into the clean water that they have never seen. :P

Thanks! I'll start vacuuming!
