Have my Rasboras spawned?
Hello, everyone. I'm totally new here, and new to the hobby. I've had a 10 gallon community tank going for about 5 months. My population consists of 5 Neons, 3 Harlequin Rasboras, 3 Corys, and a selection of live plants.
Yesterday I noticed one of my Rasboras hovering upside down on the under side of leaves, which I came to find out was a spawning behavior. I watched her continue for about a half hour, though I never actually saw any eggs, nor did I see a male join her. I don't know for how long she continued after I left.
Considering my inexperience, I'm just curious as to the likelihood that there may be eggs in the tank, now? If so, should I be able to see them? Do Rasboras ever exhibit breeding behavior like this without actually reproducing?
I realize my tank is far from the ideal environment for eggs or fry, and that either would probably be eaten before long, but the prospect of having my fish reproduce is still exciting, so I just want to know if it actually happened. :-D
I've had my Harlies do the same thing but never saw any eggs.
I hope it is spawning activity, as fish should not otherwise be upside down.
If you check our profile of this fish, Harlequin Rasbora [click on the shaded name to go there] it mentions they spawn on the underside of leaves. Sometimes the cyprinids and characins go through the motions, almost like a practice run, before any leggs are actually laid. My pencilfish do this regularly.
If eggs do appear, they will likely be eaten. Almost any fish in the tank will readily eat eggs and fry if they find them. But at least having the fish feel good enough to spawn is rewarding. If the plant cover is really thick, eggs and some fry sometimes survive, the fry feed on microscopic plankton among the plants.
