Problem with new Buenos aires tetras
Ok so after alot of headaches my fish tank survived with 2 platys. My tank is a 10g with a penguin 100 filter.
I have become very fond of these platys and don't want anything to happen to them. Today I had to get filters for my tank. Well while I was there me and the store owner got to talking and he ended up giving me 2 buenos aires tetras that are about 3 inches long. I really don't know anything about fish so I said ok. In hindsight this may have been a bad idea because they seem to be nipping at my platys.
Will these tetras be ok with my platys or will they have to visit the porcelain god tonight?
I see people are saying they should be kept in larger numbers, am I going to have a problem with only having 2?
Well now these fish are just weird. The one tetra keeps burying himself in the gravel??? All that is sticking out of the gravel is is the tip of his tail. My water conditions are PH 7.4 amonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate .50. I just had my water tested today while I was at the store so I don't think there is anything wrong with my tank.
It sounds like there is something wrong with that fish. I will leave that, as I am not much when it comes to diesease issues. And i think you have another problem which actually could be part of this one.
A 10g tank is way to small for almost any of the "normal" tetra, and certainly for a 3-inch tetra. And yes, they must be kept in groups of at least 6. You can read why in our profile of this species, click on the shaded name Buenos Aires Tetra. Shoaling fish that are not in groups will be under constant stress which weakens the immune system and can lead to various health problems and shorter lives. And aggression, such as your have already witnessed, is one likely result from too few fish and too small an environment. It mentions in our profile that in less than 6 fin nipping is usual.
I would ask the store to take them back; if they knew your tank was a 10g they should never have sold you these fish.
