Anything about plants your dying to know?
So I'm taking a botany class in college and I need to come up with research project to work on all semester. I want this research to be on aquatic plants...cause their awesome, but I'm not sure what I want to study as of yet.
I thought is would be pretty cool if someone here has had an observation they always pondered or something and then I could go and explain the results here or something...just a thought...what do you guys think?
I wish someone would do some real research on Allelopathy between species...
I hate having a plant doing well, move it into another tank so it has more room, and it's dead in a week... Same parameters, temp, lighting, everything.
Just a thought, but I always wondered what exactly triggers the effect of "crypt melt", where a Crytpocoryne Wendtii loses a substantial number of its leaves when first introduced to a new environment, only to regrow healthy leaves in the future.
Supposedly the Crypt does this to adapt to new environmental conditions, but I've always been curious as to what exactly causes this.
Well there are some terrestrial plants that do that too.. The leaves are sensitive, the roots aren't.
More specifically though, are the new leaves more adapted to their new environment? Are they more efficient at generating glucose, etc than the older leaves from their previous environment?
crypt melt is a "stress" response. Similar to how some animals pull out their fur or feathers when stressed.
I took a botany class last semester. Contracted it for honors credits and had to write a paper about Poly(A) binding proteins in Arabidopsis. It was super duper exciting :|.
I second the allelopathy. I would also like to understand more about how and why flowering occurs underwater because I've never seen a bee with scuba gear.
I've never seen a plant flower underwater unless the bud was there when it was submerged. interesting idea though.
I stand corrected.
Hilarious find redchigh!
Crypt melt ! did not know of such a thing .I had a glorious one since September grew at least three times its size ...I was about to start a thread on weather its better to trim or transplant and then BOOM in three days all but two leaves are left and melt is just what it did ..all other plants are fine....very stange would love to know why?...good luck with your project!
