Need help with additions to new 29 gallon tank
In about another 2 weeks I will have the following in my 29 gallon:
3 x-ray albino tetra
2 badis badis (see attached picture)
5 neon tetras
When it is safe to do so (watching nitrites and nitrates) I'd like to add a centerpiece fish or 2 that are little larger than the tetras, but would work in a community tank. Any suggestions?
Not badis badis
Since posted this picture, I found out that what I was sold as badis badis are really lamprologus multifasciatus (world's smallest cichlid)
The cichlid is actually now Neolamprologus multifasciatus, as of a revision in 1991; in case you are searching for it.
This is a Lake Tanganika cichlid, and the water in that lake is about as hard as freshwater can be--many refer to it as "liquid rock." The fish need hard basic water, much harder that any characins from SA can manage in long-term. I really would not combine them. Plus the fact that even though small in size, it is quite an aggressive fish, and mild-mannered tetra will not stand a chance when this fish gets settled.
N. multifasciatgus is small enough to mange fine in a 10g where it can be on its own in a small group or pair. They are shell dwellers, and will do better with some empty shells. Youo can find out a lot more here: Neolamprologus multifasciatus - Seriously Fish
The 29g can then be set up for the tetra community.
