Been exceptionally busy and had disappeared. I'm back for now and still just as thankful for all the advice. Starting up a 2.5g since the 29g will not happen. All of those pictures and problems are soon to come as well as an update on my 10 gallon (what a rollercoaster). For now its, nice to just be back on here reading and chatting. How are things going?
It's good to see you back. Why so many tank troubles? Are you putting a betta in the 2.5 gallon?
Hey there Romad :)
I have considered placing my betta in the 2.5. Although, it's quite small in there. Even without plants in it. What is the smallest size tank a betta would be comfortable in?
And as for tank troubles. I will sum that up with Algae, Algae, Filter breaks, and more Algae. String algae, among others, was the beast. It infected my tank and several plants. Other plants did not do well over time and I removed many of them, but most due to algae. The removal of all the plants sparked tension in the tank. I assume territories were re-established and things got bitter between the zebra Danios and the Oto (they had always chased him, but not violently). The oto could not survive his injuries and perished :( He was my favorite in the tank too...
Have tried many things to defeat this string algae, but it still prevails, the best thing I can do is to manually remove it each week. I am going to get a couple nerite's to take the duty of mr. oto, but I dont know what to do about the sting algae.
On the bright side of things - i started with 1 java fern and now have four :) . The anubias plant is now two. And a few of the crypts are doing well, specifically undulata.
Dreaded algae... Grrrrrrr!!! It sounds like you have a good game plan tho.
As for the 2.5 gallon, I have 5 of them up and running and cycled with a male betta in each. Ideally, I would love to have them all in a 5 gallon each but don't have the surface room for that many.
As long as you don't overcrowd the 2.5 gal with decorations, a singe betta should do just fine. I have one little hiding log/cave in each with a silk plant and a 25w heater. It beats the heck out of the cups they were living in.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Hey Aqua Jon, welcome back! I've also had my fair share of algae problems and am sorry you are having them too. I'm really sorry that you lost Mr. Oto. Just one more reason to add to the list of why I don't like danios...
Good luck getting your tanks squared away!
Thanks auntie :)
Is this something common with danios? o.O I really dont know much about them. I might have to pass them off to someone else... I've had a recent interest in slightly larger fish like gourami, bolivian rams and such.
I have seven danios in the 10 gallon. There is plenty of swim room (which they use well) and food to go around. I still dont understand the attack.
hi and welcome back. :)
