I have always used a sharp blade. Either a box razor or a sharp knife. Hold the blade at an angle less than 60 degrees. Careful to scrape and not slice, kind of like shaving, no cutting movement of the blade against the glass. Only on glass though, no acrylic. If you are worried, practice in an area that is likely to get covered up, like the bottom of the tank. Hope that helps
