Too high alkalinity and Ph
 
New aquarium owner here. I have a 5 gallon tank and I use well water. The hardness is fine, but the alkalinity and Ph is too high according to a 5-in-one test stick. I used Ph Down but it's still too high. I've added cardinal tetras now. How can I get the alkalinity and Ph down without resorting to crushed coral or driftwood? Is there a way to slowly lower them without harming the fish using the Ph Down? Next time I suppose I should use 50% well water and 50% city tap water? Or 50% distilled water? Or 50% bottled water? How long after adding Ph Down before you should test again?

Crushed coral will raise your ph. Not sure if driftwood will have an effect. PH down is only temporary and should not be used as the PH will shift back to its orignal ph in about 24 hours.

I use API's Proper PH 7.0 it seems to work good for me the only time I need to add any is during a large water change it lowered my ph and keeps it steady.

Water itself has buffers that cause the PH to be "set" where it is. Using PH up or down only provides a quick fix to the problem. The water will then reset it self to its buffer.

Proper PH rebuffers the water to hold a stable ph.

I havent heard any negative feedback from the community on this as of yet. But it works for me.
