black water extract
i am considering adding this to my discus tank to lower the ph to a more natural level. I found a site that has instructions for making your own that is very simple. It involves some oak leaves and boiling water. I was just wondering if anyone has either added the black water extract you can buy or has tried making their own and with what result? Here is the site i was talking about.
I thought you used peat to make black-water...
I have three blackwater tanks. I have heard of using oak leaves to make a tea to add to the water. I have never used this method, nor do I know of anyone, personally, who has. I use Tetra's Blackwater Extract and filter over peat. I also use a softening pillow in my power filters to bring the pH to the desired level. Be sure to follow the directions on the box if you use the softening pillow. You cannot use carbon in your filters if you use any type of tannic extract in your tank as the carbon will filter it out.
I used the almond leaves before and they do lower the pH and work as much as peat and driftwoods do. On the other hand, it is difficult to lower your pH if your KH is high. Be careful with the leaves. They must be replaced as they can be a mess when they turn mushy and will cause ammonia spike although ammonia is not as toxic unless the water's pH is high.
for water hardness, out of 10 ours is 6. we have a large piece of mopani drifwood in there and peat granules in the filter. we do have carbon in there too though. will the carbon reduce the amount that the peat and driftwood lower the ph?
The only time I use carbon is to filter out meds. It's a trick I learned from Jack Wattley himself (you know, the discus guy).
