What kind of Cichlid is this??
Purchased her as a Firemouth Cichlid, but my fish looks NOTHING like a Firemouth. She has also grown extremely fast (faster then my actual juvenile firemouth!). She has more than doubled her size in the month that I have had her (assuming its a her, a confirmation on her sex would be awesome too!!! ;-))
Pretty sure she is a Central American Cichlid...she has (obviously) thrived in the CA Cichlid water parameters I have provided for her on the original assumption that she/he was a Firemouth. Even though she/he looks kind of like an Orange Blossom Peacock, that isnt a CA Cichlid.
Any ideas what she might be?? I have asked before, but didnt get too many answers so I thought I would ask one more time, and see if I get lucky and find someone who may have even owned a cichlid that looks just like mine.
A little about her personality: Her name is Bonnie (assumption of sex). Her nickname is Dump Truck, because she likes to pick up 1-2 pieces of gravel at a time in her mouth, and pile it up next to her clay pot...and when she gets bored, Bonnie likes to put gravel on top of her log cave. She likes to play tag with the juvenile Firemouth, chasing him around the tallest plant around and around, never nipping and always stopping when the little Firemouth stops for a break. At one point there was a school of 5 small tiger barbs that she found entertaining and liked to swim with. She is very peaceful for a cichlid, and likes to beg for food like a dog.
As for the pictures, there are less blurry versions of these same pictures available on my profile and aquarium log. Also videos on the aquarium log as well as on my youtube channel for my fish which is the same as my name on here (LasColinasCichlids).
Thanks in advance!!!
I tried to look her up but wow there are thousands of species. and lots of sites have no pics. My only suggestion is to take the pic to the store and ask... did you try that? I'm assuming female as she is nest building moving gravel. Very very nice fish! And Sparky is really cute too! How big do they get?
I have asked a couple of aquarium stores, and their best guess thus far is a hybrid cichlid of some sort. I also was told that she could be a very odd looking Firemouth (I doubt that, her growth rate is far too fast), and I was told she could even be an Orange Blossom Peacock Cichlid, which would make her an African Cichlid and NOT a Central American Cichlid which she has been kept with and had the tank conditions for since a little thing.
Yeah, I have been thinking female on her since the day I got her. She started to bully a little bit with the other two fish today, so I put the gravel back that she had dug up to give her something to do with her time verses chase the little firemouth or steal the BGK's favorite cave from him.
Sparky, the BGK, general get to about 12 inches in aquariums, 18-20 inches in the wild. He is a small guy, so I have a good two years before he gets to 8 or 9 inches, in which case I will be purchasing a 60 gallon ensamble for him and the cichlids, as both cichlids will be anywhere from 5-7 inches full grown. But it is just the 3 of them in the tank at the moment, and except for Bonnie, the fish are under 3-4 inches. Bonnie is growing so super fast...she has practically doubled or tripled her size in a month!!
BGK's also have particular tank needs since they dont have scales and only eat certain foods. Since mine is so small the only thing he can eat at the moment is small freeze-dried bloodworms. When he gets a little bigger I will be giving him a more varied diet, although I heard there is something out there now I can feed him that I will be looking for next time I go out. BGK's also are said to avoid tank lights, hide a lot, and be completely nocternal. Sparky is special, or so I'd like to think. About every day at 3pm he comes to the top of the tank skimmering the outside edges waiting for his bloodworms. And he likes to sleep upside down in the plants. The firemouth thinks he is super cool and tries to follow him around like follow the leader. Bonnie doesnt notice him too often except when their backs bump when skimming at the top at feeding time, and ocassionally she will try to climb in his rock cave with him, in which he says no way and exits to one of his favorite plants. Although Bonnie will share her favorite log with him. They are very amusing fish that keep me entertained, I think of them as puppies or children because I have developed such a connection with each of these three fish.
And thank you for the tank compliment. It cost a pretty penny to get the bigger tank to look the way it does, which I did not expect, but am happy to do to keep my fish healthy and happy.
Yes. Puppies are exactly how I would describe Cichlids. Many years ago I had 3 large Oscars and 2 Bala Sharks in a 90G. All were good until we lost one Oscar and the remaining two started Tug Of War in the tank daily. We eventually sold the tank and it was many years later that I have started back into it all. I am not disciplined enough to attempt a Marine tank. And our water here is extreemly hard and Alkaline 8.4 which means Cichlids. Having said that I'm managing a community tank now, pics avail on my aquarium tab and and hopefully a preg Swordtail. I also have my first two Rainbowfish and love them. They were alway the expensive fish at the LFS so never was able to get them. Found some little ones, got two and they very pretty. One is my Avatar. It amazes me that they love to visit with you thru the glass and love to have my Iphone up against the glass taking video. They all crowd around to see what it is.
Also fasinated with my two Pearl Gouramis, when these supposed calmest fish.... are not chasing each other around, are playing touchy feely with their feelers. reaching out to stroke each other. amazing. Love my fishies too! Best of luck, hope you find out what she is, she has quite the personality!! thanks for the info on the BGK.
No problem (bgk info).
I did look at your tank pics and they are awesome!!! I like the way the dog is looking at the tank in the first picture! lol
As far as my water here goes, I control it. I use these dissolving tablets called tank buddies that slowly change the pH close to 7.0 and that removes ammonia...it works for three weeks and one box is enough for me to treat both my tanks twice (6 weeks), and they are under $5.
For my cichlid & BGK tank, the pH is sitting right around 7.0-7.2 the hightest it ever went was 7.4 and it has not dropped below 7.0
Gouramis, I think they are such pretty fish. One of my lfs many years ago use to have a Giant Gouramis, it was HUGE, and super friendly...they had it in a huge above ground interior pond and had his house with giant koi.
Thank you, I hope I do find out exactly what she is.
Thank you too! Yes Dillon loves the fish and is calm until the Pleco comes out and has to make it go away! Bark, dig, pounce. Not good for the tank I'm sure.
I fell in love with the pirate ship and my daughter gave it to me for Christmas. I really want to try real plants but I can't as long as I still have the large Pleco. It will eat them. I cook zuccini and brocolli in the microwave, cool them down and drop them in and it will come out and eat them. Otherwise it gets algea disks. Also have a black and white striped Raffaele Cat but it does not ever come out of the base of the ship, not sure what or when it ever eats!! It's fat tho.
This weekend my heater failed and the tank was sitting at 66 degrees. It was -5 F outside... OMG. finally ran out to Walmart and got a smaller heater 30-60G, LFS does not carry large in stock and next LFS is over an hour away. Temp today is back up to 74, I usually keep it at 78. But everyone seems much happier! no casualties...yet. Let's hope not.
If you ever find out what your Cichlid is, please let me know, I would love to have one like that, so much personality!
Yes, the ship in your tank looks so cool!!! And I couldnt have live plants with my big cichlid, she would dig them up and carry them across the tank for fun. lol
Glad none of your fish were lost during the heater crisis! I dont use a heater on my small tank, only because it is a 5 gal, the light warms it, and its in the kitchen which stays pretty warm. I check the temp regularly and it stays around 78F. As for my bigger tank, it has a 50watt heater, but I keep it turned down low, my temp on that tank ranges between 80-82F.
I was thinking about adding a catfish to my big tank with Tim, Bonnie, & Sparky. I was thinking about an upside down catfish. I want one that wont get too big but yet could hold its own. I dont know, I am kind of content with the group I have in the tank.
Once I find out what kind of cichlid Bonnie is, I will for sure let you know. Knowing my luck, she is a one of a kind, happened on accident Hybrid that no one knows what made her.
My guess would be Pseudotropheus tropheops or Labotropheus fullenborini making her a Lake Malawi African or a Peacock. Is definitely not a firemouth, not even the right body shape.
Found out what she is!!!
My fish is actually a Juvenile Red Devil Cichlid!! AHHH!!!
Yeah, having to re-home her, as my tank could handle a 6 inch Firemouth, and I could have even made adjustments for a Peacock, but not for a 12 inch killing machine!
My local aquarium store said to call ahead, but they should be able to take her in for me. Going to see if they will take my juvenile FM too since he has decided to start nipping at my baby Black Ghost Knife. Then I will just start the stocking process all over. However this time, I am going to stick with fish that max out at a size of 4 inches, and fish that can not be mis-identified in their breeds. Of course the BGK will grow larger than 4 inches, and when the time comes that will be dealt with, most likely by upgrading to a 60 gallon.
Wow, 12 inches she will get to? Ya I guess it's better to do it now with the FM. Especially if it is bothering the ghost. It seems to be a more gentle creature. Even when it get bigger?
How did you find out?
