how the heck does a 12inch pleco even fit in a 10gal tank??!

Ask your local fish store if they'll take the fish back. If not, put an advert somewhere online offering them for rehoming - gumtree, craigs list etc

I'm certainly not an expert but I'd think a pleco that size would be unhappy in a 10 gallon. Just my opinion. Maybe look on craigslist for a bigger tank for him? They are relatively cheap on there in my experience. Oh and I'd love to see a pic of him, sounds awesome!

If it were me I would take the pleco to a pet store and see if you can trade him in. If you really like plecos there are many smaller species that can handle a smaller tank.

After I posted possibly getting a larger tank, I realized that one big enough for him to really spread out would be rather large and therefore, maybe not so cheap!

Yeah, I wouldn't put a 12" pleco in anything less than a 50 breeder, maybe a 40 if he was all alone in there. My big question is how much filtration is on the 7 goldfish and pleco. Even a decent canister filter would have trouble with all that poop.

Um not to sound mean but you tank is to small for any of these fish. Goldfish need at least 20 gallons a piece as they get big and the poor pleco probably can not even hardley move in a tank that small I would suggest takeing them to the LFS or rehoming them unless you plan on getting a huge tank for them.
