i have a 40 gallon tank unocupied and thought id try platys. how many can be in the tank?

First read about them here to make sure they will do well in your water: Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) Profile
I would say a group of 10 would be plenty because they are live bearers and will multiply pretty fast that way you have extra room for the fry.

You will have a bizillon in no time and they are pretty hardy....you could get a few females and then see what else you may want to add

Or better yet put your pleco thats in your 10 gallon in this 40 gallon.
