is a platy easier to breed than a guppy?

I'd say they are about the same, but your results will vary. Guppies are a bit more well known for being more prolific though.

have had both durning the great explosion of 2009 (guppy) soooo many........you have to separate them........now Platys what I find ....is they are slightly more interesting the fry is wicked cute get little tails straight away...guppies take longer to color up and sex......be prepared if you plan to keep fry......no to breeder net ....use live plants or plastic nest.. i have both right now ...then scoop to addtional tank so you can feed them separatley...they eat often.......:lol:

how many do they give birth to? because the more the better!

This was my first time with fish a i got some platys and 2 weeks later one gave birth to 11. Then 4 weeks later she gave birth again while i was working and only 4 survived, then 4 weeks ago she gave birth to 32 and so she is just about ready for another birth.
Ive only got about 15 or so left of my fry, a few have died and some i tried to grow in my community tank to see if they would last and grow quicker but now i cant find them, pretty sure those ones became dinner one night.

Ive also read that the older the platy and after a few births she will give birth to more fry. So between about 10-80 (someone said they had 103 once) that range would be normal id say, but ive only had mine for about 4 months so I'm not an expert yet.

I have found that my guppies will give me more babies, but they are also quicker to eat them. 8-)
