OMG, discus care on the internet is so conflicting and contradictory. I have read water changes every day are needed for the long term health of this fish, I have also heard that 25-30% a week is fine these quoets are all coming from discus only websites and breeders websites. See i have a 55g, i wont a school of cardinal tetras and a pair of discus, i do not wont to be doin water changes everyday I am only human i have other stuff to do with my time. To be honest i do not think discus are as hard as they are made out to be. :? :? :? :? :? :? :!: :!: :?:
What are people's thoughts in this?????
i got 2 discus last sunday and did a water change on wensday casue i haddent dun it in a couple of weeks and mine a fine. no need for it everyday unless u have some sort or problem.
tahts wat i think anyway
i just got some discus, spent lots of time neck deep in the internet as well. i think alot depends on what your feeding them. homemade food, while promotes fast growth, can be messy. plus if they are young then you have to feed them alot and that can be messy as well. the big thing is water quality. ammonia, nitrite and nitrate have to be watched. i plan on doing about 25% every 3-4 days as long as my levels stay good. i wouldn't think 2 discus in a 50 to demand daily water changes, i think it's more if you have alot of young discus in a smaller tank trying to grow them. but i'm no expert so you can take or leave my opinions. :)
2-3 times of 40% water changes in a week will be fine. Best to start with sub-adults of 4 inches or more. Younger ones don't fare well easily and can give far more troubles than adults.
They are easier to care for than most people think.
