Tonight's big excitement!!
So, tonight after dinner I let the dogs out to do their thing. I hear Doc barking his full head off . I see that he's up over the yard's retaining wall (bad dog, he knows this is a no-no!) and he's slamming his body up against the fence, whining. Suddenly I see something fall off the fence and he is now shaking whatever it is like a ragdoll in his mouth, and I hear what I swear are bones cracking.
I get up over the wall and see that he has a possum in his mouth. I grab the back of his neck and am commanding him to "drop it". He finally does and the poor thing is curled up, lying there dead. Ya, right. These animals have such an amazing instinct that earned their name. It wasn't moving a muscle even though Doc and I are standing -thisclose- to him.
I bring the dogs inside and go back out to take a picture of him. After the picture I decided to grab his tail to lift him and put him off in the side yard. The minute I take hold of his tail he curls the prehensile tail tightly around my finger. I walk across the yard, carrying him by the tail, and lay him next to the fence.
I wait, and watch, for what felt like a very long time and finally I see him starting to crawl back up the fence. Once he's fully secure on the top of the fence I go back out with my camera. Maybe I'm being completely anthropomorphic but in the last pic I swear I see a sweet little smile of gratitude on his face and a "thank you" for saving my life. What do you think?? :-)
That is cute! I love opossums. I run into those all the time. I leave cat food on the porch for the cats, and they occasionally come up to eat some. They are so cute when they play dead.:-). I have saved numerous opossums from my lab (dog). He loved to roll them around.
LOL, yep, dogs LOVE them. If you look at the first pic the possum's fur is all wet and scruffed up from Doc mouthing the heck out of him. In the last pic his fur is all nice and fluffy. ;-)
Nice save! Love the second pic. It's like he's saying "is it safe to come out now?"
You are soo brave....he is a cute little fellow ...if you have not seen the movie Over the Hedge its a must... you will just love the opossoms...my hubby loves Hamilton the squirriel!!!! looks like you never have a dull moment out there!
I am glad you saved him. Some people can't stand them but I think there kind of cute in there own weird way. LOL Oh and I LOVED the movie Over the Hedge.
aww, well done you for saving him.
why is it folks don't like them very much ?
Never a dull moment with you Kym. Great pictures you snapped of him. Hope Doc didn't get in too much trouble. He was just trying to bring his momma home a "present". ;-)

Lainey- I'm sure it's because they are so ugly looking, most of the time. I always thought so too, but now that I see how cute they can actually be, (I think these pics I posted are so cute!) I'm ok with them.
Lisa- Doc didn't get in any trouble at all! The fact that he dropped it when I said ,"drop it" was amazing to me. In the past I've had a heck of a time trying to pry mice and rats from his clenched teeth because he's crazed with bloodlust. That's pretty gross, having to do that. Doc is a major "hunter" and loves to kill things. Thankfully Doc loves cats!
All I can say is I'm glad Skip and Kasey hang back from all this ruckus. I can't imagine having to corral three crazed dogs in order to save a possum.
