Filter cleaned too well

I heard in another thread that cleaning the filter too well will result in green water and fish death. Well basically I guess I got it all figured out. I cleaned my aquaclear 70 so well with water that it looked new. I also squeezed and cleaned the sponge as much as i can in removed tank water. My green spotted puffer died and I beleive it was due to an ammonia spike or the thick green water I had. So how long should I expect the tank to be cycled again after cleaning the filter too well?

Chrisi, I thought you would know better than that  did you do anything with the substrate/ornamentation?

I didn't touch anything inside the tank but only the auqalcear filter. I was trying to get rid of algae in the filter and its sponge.

How big is your tank / filter? :)

Algae buildup on the filter I remove with a toothbrush. Just enough so that it disappears. No rinsing, just scrubbing the affected areas.
