Need help identifying this cichlid species!
Hi all! First off, thanks for reading in hopes of assisting me!
The picture I am talking about is my profile picture, and there are more in my album here on TFK.
I got a couple of Firemouth Cichlids from Petsmart about a month ago. The one juvenile is for sure a Firemouth. The larger one just doesnt look like a firemouth to me. After scowering through pictures of different cichlids, mine looks like an orange blossom peacock cichlid.
So, I was wondering if anyone could take a look and let me know if it is an OB Peacock or a Firemouth, or any other cichlid it might be.
I dont know the sex, but I call it a her. When I got her she was about 2 inches...and in just a month she has jumped to over 3 inches, pushing 4. While my juvenile firemouth came to me at just over an inch and hasnt crept over 2 inches.
Anyone able to sex this cichlid as well, and I would be very grateful!!!
Oh, and if she is NOT a OBP or a FM, and you know what she is, can you tell me a bit more about that particular breed you think she is (like how big she will get, personality tendencies, compatable tankmates...). Her and the young FM get along great...and she actually likes to play with my algae eaters who are only about 2 inches.
It's not a Firemouth. I would say most likely a OB Peacock or maybe a hybrid. I don't have much experience with the African cichlids so I can't be sure but definitely not a FM.
Thanks so much for your input. I didnt think it was a Firemouth either, and if it is an OB Peacock, I got a great deal, as I only paid $1.99 for her.
Spotted African Leaf Fish
They are rather shy fish and like to hide a lot so need a cave or some kind of cover to hide in and lots of plants to make them feel secure. They are best kept with non-aggressive fish. They aren't very aggressive but are predatory so can't be kept with any small fish such as smaller tetras and such. I have mine in a 55 gallon with full grown Congo tetras, an angelfish, some cories and a BN. Mine is about 6" now so they do get to a pretty good size.
What size tank do you have? I think it may do ok with the FM and maybe the Blood Parrot but I don't have any experience with peacocks. The algae eaters may bother it when they get bigger as I've heard they like to feed on the slime coat of other fishes.
My tank set up at the moment is a 29 gallon (hoping to upgrade to a 55 or 60 by end of this year).
My FM is a baby for the most part (hasnt even got his coloring in yet, he is only about 2 inches). My OB Peacock is pretty mellow, from what I understand her temperment should remain generally like the typical FM, but a tad calmer. She is a good fish.
The more I read about and get advice on the SA Leaf the more I think I will wait til I upgrade my current tank and then get one to put in the 29 gal after I have got a 55 or 60 gal started.
Thanks so much!!!
Any other neat fish you might recommend that is 6" or smaller and would get along with my cichlids?
I like fish that are different, unique, yet very pretty. (Wasnt a fan of the FM, but needed a hardy tank cycling fish and he won my heart with his little personality.)
As far as the algae eaters go, I have always had bad experiances with them dying. And a pleco gets way to big for my tank I have right now. So sadly, I have low expectations for my current algae eaters to survive for too long...and if they do, they will have to get in a bigger tank since these I have can get to like 11 inches!
These are the first algae eaters in this tank, when I say they died on me, that is back many years ago. As this is my first aquarium in like 4 years, and my last one 4 years ago was only a 10 gal with some guppies and an albino frog that ate everyone, lol.
Thanks so much for your insight!!!
An interesting fish that could me kept with the Leaf fish is the African Butterfly fish. They look mean, but are quite peaceful. With some live plants, that would make a very interesting set-up
