Standout fish for community aquarium
Hi everyone. I have a 20G/75L long planted tank, which I rescued from a friend and have been slowly stocking with species to my taste. At the moment I have:
8 x Cardinal tetra
5 x Corydoras Sterbai
1 x Leopard frog pleco
1 x Ancistrus
some cherry red shrimp
Before anyone cries 'overstock!', they're all juvenile at present and are pretty small. When everything reaches adult size I'm getting a bigger tank. I'm also doing weekly 20% water changes, although even this may be overkill, as nitrite doesn't even register. The tank is very peaceful, I haven't seen any anomalous or potentially stressful behaviour
I'm looking for a standout, centrepiece fish to complete the community. The corys tend to stay at the bottom, the plecos the sides and bottom, and the tetras generally school together in the mid/low region. This means that there is actually quite a bit of space in the mid to surface region. The tank used to have a gold gourami fulfilling the role, but I relocated him before filing the tank, as he wasn't the most peaceful of fish.
So I'm looking for something colourful and striking to occupy the mid to surface region. Ideally it would be a species that doesn't mind being kept on it's own, or if a pair is needed, something small enough to fit a pair in.
To give an idea, what would be perfect in terms of look (striking, yellow - a colour I don't already have) would be a lemon cichlid. Don't worry, I know this is unsuitable
I've considered the following:
1 x betta male
M/F pair dwarf gourami
1 x blue ram cichlid
Has anyone got any ideas what might be a good striking species to finish and round off the tank?
pH ~ 6.8
KH ~ 3
GH ~ 20 – 30
Temp = 27C
do you not like guppies, they come in an array of beautiful bright colours. ?
My "standout fish" in my 10 G is a tequila sunrise guppy. It is red/orange/yellowish. Really pretty. I'd get 2 or 3 in your tank.
I quite like endlers and celestial pearl danios though, so a small shoal could be an option
i can understand that,i can't keep them alive so i don't bother anymore.
the pearl danios sound nice, are they too active for a tank that size though ?
A Honey gourami might fit the bill or perhaps a school of Threadfin Rainbows. I personally like the Paradise gourami but they can be a bit aggressive with smaller fish or fish with fins resembling Bettas or other paradise gourami's.
Have also recently become fond of Emperor Tetra's. They are quite striking in my view.
If I get a school, it would need to be something tiny
I've been looking at the Paradise Gourami. Do you think they'll be safe with the shrimp and the cardinal tetras? I've read accounts of them being quite nippy
Edit - Scratch that, think the PG is a bit risky in my small community with what I've got in there
